Background

The consortium applied for this project in response to a growing need in the planning community for structured, inclusive, and genuinely integrated collaboration across disciplines, roles, and governance levels. While urban and spatial planning has always been inherently multidisciplinary, in practice, knowledge production, education, and decision-making remain fragmented along disciplinary and role-based lines (academia, practice, policy). This fragmentation limits the sector’s capacity to effectively address complex challenges like climate change, post-pandemic urban transformations, and social and spatial inequalities. Via NTUA´s involvement in the Erasmus+ project InPlanEd, a critical gap was identified: meaningful knowledge co-creation cannot be achieved by higher education institutions alone. Effective integrated planning requires systematic involvement of practitioners and policy officers, supported by appropriate communication frameworks, participatory methods, and organizational structures. This project addresses the need for transdisciplinary planning approaches, the development of forward-looking green and digital skills, and the creation of institutionalized spaces for democratic and effective knowledge co-creation.
