COB is a 20-year-old social cooperative founded to disseminate the principles and practices of natural building and bioclimatic architecture, rooted in sustainable resource and energy management. Over the years, our mission has evolved to encompass the education of youth and the broader public on sustainable living, eco-friendly building techniques, renewable energy solutions, self-sufficiency, permaculture, and regenerative farming. Acting as an educational hub and a field for experimentation and practical implementation, COB is uniquely positioned to empower young people with the knowledge and tools to become active, responsible citizens who can propose sustainable solutions for the challenges of the 21st century. This project consisted of two complementary activities: a 15 day Professional development activity that was formed into a Permaculture Design Training Course (PDC), titled: “Taproots : Pioneers in environmental change”; a 16 day Youth Exchange titled “Low-Tech EcoCamp - Hands on learning for sustainable living”, which emphasized sustainable living through low-impact, low-technology solutions. The full experience and real time implementation of the activities on the farm were vital in helping young people develop realistic expectations of green careers and way of life - cultivating a holistic view of what is termed as "sustainability". The main objectives of both activities were to: Promote the benefits of sustainable living alternatives such as permaculture, eco-building, regenerative farming and low technological energy solutions, which minimize the environmental impact. Enhance the holistic development of young people by generating awareness about climate change and environmental protection through hands-on green practices. Provide new professional opportunities in green sustainability sectors, addressing unemployment and marginalization among youth facing fragile socio-economic situations. Foster environmental responsibility and social inclusion using a holistic approach to sustainability. Aligned with the European Commission’s priorities on Environment and Climate Action, the Greek National Agency’s focus on sustainability and the objectives of our Accreditation, the project aimed to: Strategically develop youth engagement in Europe’s environmental efforts, broadening the horizons of youth workers and young people and connecting them with European opportunities for innovation in sustainability. Improve participants’ sustainability skills and knowledge, creating scalable tools and techniques for green practices tailored to local and European contexts. Position Nessonas and rural Greece as a regional agent of innovation in promoting a greener and more inclusive Europe, with direct benefits on local youth and future generations. Ensure COB’s long-term organisational sustainability to continue impactful work toward its mission. Through the Taproots (PDC) training course participants engaged in intensive theoretical and practical sessions, learning about permaculture design principles, social permaculture, water and soil management, agroforestry, and natural building. The course emphasized the importance of creating and managing regenerative ecological systems and introducing participants to climate resilience practices, particularly relevant after the catastrophic Daniel floods in September 2023. Low-Tech EcoCamp youth exchange focused on strong sustainability, collective resilience and cultural transformation. Participants engaged in hands-on methods of low technology, experiencing the ecological, participatory lifestyle of COB’s eco-community. Through non-formal education approaches and direct democratic procedures, participants gained theoretical and practical tools of low-footprint activities, while fostering ecological regeneration, low-tech innovation and active citizenship. Both activities prioritized the inclusion of a total 23 participants facing unemployment and economic obstacles, ensuring equitable access to training opportunities and fostering empowerment. Through teamwork, skill-building, and community living, participants: a) developed new competences in green practices; b)contributed to the creation of innovative tools, products, and services; c) strengthened their connections with peers and organizations across Europe, cultivating a sense of European identity and solidarity. Both activities were designed to leave a lasting impression on participants, partners, and local communities by: a) amplifying the reach and results of the Erasmus+ program; b) encouraging future cooperation between partners, youth workers and young people beyond the project’s timeline; c) supporting COB’s capacity to address Europe’s pressing environmental and social challenges; d) exemplifying the values of collaboration, sustainability, and inclusivity, empowering youth to take an active role in shaping a greener, more resilient future.
