The University of Murcia considers the ERASMUS+ programme to be of utmost importance and have a transversal impact. Historically a cornerstone of UMU’s internationalisation, the Vice-Rectorates join efforts by proposing joint strategies of inclusion, digitalisation, and sustainability as pillars of the international action carried out by members of the university community, effectively contributing to equal opportunities in society. UMU’s trajectory has been grounded in the values of diversity and inclusion, reflected in its teaching, research, and services provided to Murcia society and to an ever-increasing number of visitors. In the academic years 2023/24 and 2024/25, several actions of international impact have been carried out: A) The hosting at UMU of the Assembly of Rectors and the conference “Becoming a Voice for Wellbeing,” which consolidated UMU’s role in its first year within the consortium of European Universities in the network called European University for Well-being (EUniWell). This conference provided a platform to reflect on the achievements of the project’s first phase and served as a bridge for the transition to a wider collaboration with additional institutions in the network, strengthening the engagement of the EUniWell community and its academic and social environments. B) At the national level, the organisation of the XX Internationalisation and Cooperation Conference of CRUE (Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities), attended by experts from Spanish and international universities, addressed crucial issues regarding the future of internationalisation and inter-university cooperation. The main objectives were to analyse the impact of European initiatives on the Spanish higher education system, emphasise the importance of language training for students and staff in mobility, and explore new dimensions of student mobility aligned with the vision of a global and inclusive education. C) At the local UMU level, as part of an improvement line for IT resources, during the 2023/24 academic year the Vice-Rectorate for Internationalisation, in close collaboration with the IT Service, carried out the adaptation of UMU to the ambitious Erasmus Without Paper (EWP) project, to digitally share and manage institutional agreements and students’ academic arrangements (OLA – Online Learning Agreement). Digital transition has also been a key priority for the Vice-Rectorate for Strategy and Digital University, which has focused not only on updating hardware and software systems but also on training users in digital competences, aiming to maximise the potential of new technologies and maintain the international competitiveness of our IT services in support of the university community. The challenge posed by the EWP project has encouraged UMU to advance in digital transition and align with the European partner network to enhance the overall experience of international mobility for our users, as well as for the staff involved throughout the mobility process, who are regularly trained on platform tools through accredited staff courses. UMU has made attention to diversity a fundamental pillar of its internationalisation strategy, particularly within the Erasmus+ mobility framework. Its approach goes beyond mere architectural accessibility, seeking the removal of all types of barriers to ensure inclusion. UMU has implemented concrete initiatives to become an inclusive destination, supported by the Diversity and Volunteering Service, which assists students by providing comprehensive support from the beginning to the end of their stay. To reach students facing economic, social, or cultural obstacles, UMU has invested in Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP). Their short-duration design strengthens internationalisation at home and has proven to be an effective tool for inclusion, allowing participation for those unable to undertake long-term stays due to limited resources, family or work obligations, or language barriers. This format not only benefits students but has also been extended to management and administrative staff, facilitating their mobility. The involvement of academic staff has been crucial for the successful coordination of these programmes, which promote a paradigm shift in teaching and learning through innovative methods and transnational collaboration. UMU’s focus on diversity and inclusion in academic mobility demonstrates its commitment to the European values of equal opportunities.
