With this first Erasmus+ 2023-1-ES01-KA131-HED-000121708 project, IES Abdera aimed to decisively launch the process of internationalisation, making it a fundamental and cross-cutting axis of our institutional ecosystem. Our intention was to go beyond the simple implementation of mobilities, with the conviction that opening up to the European context had to become part of our institutional identity and serve as a lever for educational, social and cultural transformation. The main objective was to provide both students and staff with new opportunities for learning, personal development and professional growth, fully aligned with the principles of the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE): ensuring equal opportunities and inclusion, encouraging the participation of students with fewer opportunities, guaranteeing academic recognition of learning outcomes, promoting digitalisation in mobility management, and integrating sustainable practices in all stages of the project. From the very beginning, we were also aware that this project had to be a valuable learning experience for the institution itself. In the case of staff mobilities, we made significant progress in understanding how collaboration between educational institutions and companies is organised in Europe, particularly in countries where dual training systems are more consolidated. Spain was in the process of implementing a new dual VET system, and thanks to these mobilities, our teachers were able to anticipate this change, observe successful practices in other European contexts, and transfer this knowledge to our own reality. This experience has been crucial in strengthening the link between education and the labour market, inspiring new forms of collaboration that we are already applying within our centre. Furthermore, the project enabled us to establish strong alliances with other European institutions —schools, companies and host organisations— which not only enriched the mobility experiences, but also paved the way for new international cooperation projects. These networks of trust are an invaluable legacy of this first project, placing us in a strong position to continue growing within the Erasmus+ programme and to expand the international opportunities available to our community. Ultimately, what we expected to achieve was for internationalisation to move from being a complementary activity to becoming a central pillar of IES Abdera’s strategy. We have achieved this with enthusiasm, commitment and the full involvement of our educational community, which has embraced the idea that the future of our school depends on training European citizens who are competent, open-minded, and able to thrive in a global environment. This project has not been an end in itself, but rather the beginning of a promising journey that has already started to transform the way we teach, learn, and connect with the world.
