Objectives

Our institution, I.E.S. SANTA MARÍA LA REAL, is located in Aguilar de Campoo, in the north-eastern part of the province of Palencia, in the autonomous community of Castile and León. The area in which it is located is called ‘Montaña Palentina’ and is an area that has a problem of depopulation. It is part of what is known as España Vaciada (Empty Spain), a fact that determines many of the decisions made by its inhabitants, although during the last two years, the main town where our institution is located is one of the few that has not seen a decline in population. Our institution offers secondary education, sixth form education and vocational training courses at all levels, including higher education, which is precisely where Erasmus mobility has been most successful among both students and teachers compared to vocational training at other levels. In fact, during the 2023-2024 academic year, a total of 364 students enrolled, of which 113 enrolled in all vocational training courses and, specifically, in the second year of higher-level courses, a total of 17 enrolled, some of whom withdrew in the first term. uring the 2024-25 academic year, a total of 370 students were enrolled, including 87 in all vocational training courses and 20 in the second year of higher education, although this year also saw an increase in the number of dropouts. From the very beginning of our journey with this Training/Apprenticeship programme, it was clear that we had to launch our strategy of Europeanisation and internationalisation, so that both students and teachers would discover that the Erasmus programme is not only available for university education, but also for vocational training. For this 2023-25 project, our Erasmus+ candidates ( staff) who were selected chose the countries where they would carry out their mobility programmes, taking into account, on the one hand, the similarities between our education systems and our structure and, on the other hand, the language skills that significantly facilitate their mobility. Initially, our project met the requirements, including compliance with the conditions of non-discrimination, equal opportunities and transparency. In fact, the teacher mobility programmes have fully achieved their objective, but it is fair to say that the student mobility programmes have been unsuccessful for the two academic years 23-24 and 24-25. There are several reasons for this fact, which only occurred during the year following the pandemic. The main reason is that during those courses, there were few students in both training cycles, their age was higher than usual, so their personal situation was different, and in other cases, they were combining work with studies, which made it difficult for them to travel to another country to complete the FCT module. With regard to training mobility, this has taken place in both Portugal and Estonia, and the benefits have been considerable, both for the participants, who have seen an increase in their skills, particularly in terms of language and training, and for our own institution, benefits that will be seen in the coming academic years. It is important to note here that for the current academic year, a collaboration with the centre in Estonia will begin. The Erasmus+ programme provides us, as an institution, with increasing internationalisation and better support for international cooperation and the strengthening of our institution with other higher education institutions abroad, connection with practice through internships, strengthening the quality dimension of mobility, support for the creativity and innovative approach of staff and the transfer of their knowledge to the curriculum, or more accurate feedback on a regular basis from project participants.
