The implementation of this mobility project pursued a clear objective: to strengthen the quality of the training provided by our institution in the fields of animal husbandry, agriculture and veterinary assistance, through direct experiences in family farms and educational institutions across Europe. The purpose was that both students and teaching staff could engage in practical learning processes in contact with different realities of the agricultural sector, while at the same time consolidating cooperation links with strategic partners in several countries. For the students, a group enrolled in the Higher Vocational Training Programme in Animal Husbandry and Assistance in Animal Health had the opportunity to complete a two-month traineeship in Irish family farms during February and March 2024. These placements took place in holdings such as Woodbrook Farm, Hinchion Farm, Fehin Farm, Coolnakilla Farm, as well as other family-run farms managed by the O’Regan, Duggan, O’Connor, Campbell, Cronin, Reilly, Fehin and Kelleher families, among others. The main aim of these mobilities was for the future professionals of the sector to acquire technical competences related to cattle management, feeding and reproduction, implementation of health protocols, and sustainable management of natural resources in a context where pasture-based production systems predominate. At the same time, the mobility sought to promote transversal competences such as autonomy, adaptability, teamwork and communication in English, all of which are essential for their personal and professional development. The expectation was that this international experience would strengthen their motivation to continue training and provide them with a more competitive profile to become farmers, veterinarians, veterinary assistants or technicians in the agri-livestock sector. For the teaching staff, mobility was focused on job-shadowing activities in agricultural training institutions in Germany, France and Portugal, such as Max-Eyth-Schule BBS Schiffdorf, Maison Familiale Rurale de Fougerolles, the Escola Profissional de Agricultura e Desenvolvimento Rural de Ponte de Lima, and the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo. The goal was to observe innovative methodologies in agricultural education, analyse training programmes in rural areas, and learn from experiences of cooperation between training centres and family farms. This comparative perspective was expected to enrich teaching practices, improve pedagogical planning, and strengthen the international dimension of our institution. Transversally, the project aimed at creating a stable European network of collaboration between family farms and agricultural training institutions, ensuring continuity of these experiences in the future. Building trust-based relationships with host partners and generating synergies to promote further mobility for both students and staff in the coming years were seen as fundamental steps. The expected results were defined at several levels: a significant improvement in the technical and pedagogical qualifications of participants, the acquisition of new methodologies and approaches applicable in our centre, the reinforcement of linguistic and intercultural competences, and the consolidation of a stronger internationalisation strategy. In addition, the project aimed to promote shared European values such as sustainability, innovation and interregional cooperation, which are considered essential for the future of the agricultural sector. In short, this project sought to ensure that every participant would grow both personally and professionally, while our institution reinforced its commitment to international openness and to training professionals capable of addressing the challenges of the rural environment with a broader, more innovative and more sustainable vision.
