Objectives

Through this project, we aimed to foster intercultural understanding and social inclusion among primary school students from Spain, Türkiye, and Greece by using music as a shared means of communication and expression. We wanted students to develop creativity, artistic sensitivity, and empathy towards other cultures while improving their linguistic and digital competences. The project also sought to strengthen cooperation among teachers through the exchange of good practices in music education, promoting innovative and collaborative methodologies. Additionally, it aimed to enhance the sense of European identity and active citizenship by presenting cultural diversity as a shared source of enrichment. Overall, the project aspired to create more open, participatory school communities aware of music’s power to connect people and cultures.

Background

The project Harmonizing Cultures: Music as a Tool for Intercultural Dialogue was born from the shared need of three schools from Spain, Türkiye, and Greece to promote inclusion, mutual understanding, and cooperation among pupils from diverse cultural backgrounds. In our school communities, we observed growing challenges related to linguistic, social, and cultural diversity, which highlighted the importance of creating educational experiences that foster empathy, creativity, and coexistence. Music, as a universal language, was identified as a powerful tool to break barriers, strengthen identity, and encourage collaborative learning. The project also aimed to enhance students’ digital, linguistic, and artistic competences, while providing teachers with opportunities for professional development and the exchange of good practices. Through workshops, transnational meetings, and virtual activities, the project addressed inclusion, active participation, and intercultural dialogue in an innovative and engaging way within European primary education.
