Objectives

The project aimed to empower SME managers, future entrepreneurs, and decision-makers with Artificial Intelligence and machine learning skills to drive their companies toward the circular economy. The main objective was to develop and validate a training programme that integrates AI and sustainability concepts. Specific objectives included: defining the green and digital competences SMEs need; designing and testing a comprehensive e-learning programme; creating collaborative tools for peer-learning and networking; raising awareness on data and circular business models; and facilitating professional reconversion toward sustainable, innovation-oriented management roles. Ultimately, AI4GreenSME sought to build a transnational network promoting AI-driven green growth across Europe.

Background

AI4GreenSME was created to address the dual challenge faced by European SMEs: the digital transformation gap and the urgent need for a green transition. Studies by the EC and OECD highlighted that small companies struggle to adopt Artificial Intelligence due to limited skills, resources, and understanding of its benefits. Southern European SMEs are particularly lagging behind in digital adoption, with fewer than 40% of employees using connected tools. At the same time, AI offers great potential to accelerate the circular economy by optimising business processes and reducing waste. Consortium´s partners joined forces to equip SME managers and VET providers with the competences needed to integrate AI and sustainable practices, bridging the gap between digitalisation and environmental responsibility across Europe.
