Adolescence is a crucial period for the development of social and emotional habits important for mental well-being. Multiple factors affect mental health. The more risk factors adolescents are exposed to, the greater the potential impact on their mental health. Emotional disturbances are common among adolescents. Anxiety disorders (which may involve panic or excessive worry) are most common in this age group and are more common among older adolescents than younger ones. About 20 to 25 percent of young people worldwide suffer from mental or substance abuse disorders (Youth & mental health: Challenges ahead. Journal of Medical Research. 2018) Young people also suffer a high rate of self-harm, with suicide being one of the leading causes of youth death. After the pandemic with the consequences that we all know, the situation has worsened. The report "The perception of Aragonese youth in the face of the pandemic" (IAJ. 2021) highlights the concern of young people for mental health (the second concern in order of importance), which affects almost 50% depending on age ranges and several studies from different countries around the world document an increase in mental health symptoms and a decrease in psychological wellbeing during the first wave of the pandemic. (“The effects of COVID-19 on young people’s mental health and psychological well-being.” Youth Partnership 2022) The YEAH! (Youth Exchange on Adolescent Health) aimed to raise awareness of the importance of mental health, expand knowledge about it, and help young participants learn to manage their emotions to better cope with complicated situations. Different aspects related to mental health were worked on, such as body image, the relationship with screens and social networks, addictions, eating disorders, etc. As objectives related to work with young people, the approach to the European reality, the knowledge of different cultures and realities, intercultural learning, the promotion of participation in youth associations, the contact with the Erasmus+ Program and other institutional initiatives in youth policies and education in respect, tolerance and cultural democracy.
