Objectives

The project objectives were as follows: to promote respect for interculturality to prevent hate speech, to bring participants closer to the history and sociopolitical realities of Europe in contrast to exclusionary and radicalized discourses, and to offer young people with few resources and at risk of exclusion the opportunity to learn and develop competencies that would favor their personal development and active participation in their communities. In our daily youth work, we observed the emergence of problems such as demotivation and school failure, as well as difficulties in accessing employment. Additionally, we noticed the emergence of behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes related to hate speech, such as distancing from peers of diverse backgrounds, increased conflicts with migrant populations, and the adoption of xenophobic attitudes, among others. This hate speech was present in the media, on social networks, and in the family environment, and the youth were a reflection of this issue. Our experience had taught us that experiential learning was fundamental to initiate change. We firmly believed in the program motto "Opening minds, changing lives." Therefore, we proposed a youth exchange between two groups of 17 young people each, from Spain (Canary Islands) and Bosnia Herzegovina, who were at risk of exclusion and faced a very complex socio-economic reality. The objective was to generate a positive impact on their lives. Sharing with young people from another country, outside their environment and reality, represented an invaluable opportunity to expand their horizons and build new ideas. For many of them, it was the first time they had left their regions. The experience of sharing their realities with other young people, learning about different religions and cultures, and understanding what life was like for people of the same age in different parts of the world could have been the catalyst for generating positive change. In short, we wanted to show young people the wonderful kaleidoscope of cultures that makes up Europe.
