The Erasmus+ project, coordinated by the Regional Federation of Maisons Familiales Rurales of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, aimed to address several key challenges for our network: strengthening the international openness of our higher education institutions, contributing to the development and connectivity of rural areas, supporting the professional development of staff, and promoting a culture of sustainability and civic engagement. The main objective was to increase the mobility of students enrolled in higher education through work-based learning, particularly by facilitating professional internships in Europe and beyond. These international experiences enable young people to acquire professional, linguistic, intercultural, and personal skills, enhancing their ability to integrate into an increasingly globalised labour market. They also help students find greater meaning in their training, develop autonomy, and broaden their horizons. The project also aimed to position the consortium’s institutions as active players in their local territories, capable of enriching their educational offer while contributing to local visibility and development through European openness. MFRs play an essential role in revitalising often isolated rural areas by creating opportunities for cooperation, innovation, and sustainable development. In a spirit of collaboration and co-construction, the project strengthened the regional network dynamic between MFR's delivering higher education. It helped consolidate links between institutions, share tools, develop joint actions, and foster a shared culture of mobility. This collective approach facilitates the appropriation of European issues by all stakeholders in the network. A key focus of the project was the cross-cutting integration of the international dimension into institutional projects, association strategies, and training programmes. We made sure to involve all actors — board members, school leaders, teaching teams, and learners — in this evolution. In this way, mobility becomes a lever for long-term educational transformation, supporting pedagogical innovation and individual empowerment. The project also actively promoted staff mobility, particularly for training and teaching purposes. These mobilities allow staff to build new skills, discover alternative educational practices, and strengthen their ability to guide and support students in their international experiences. They also represent a strong driver of motivation and professional engagement, encouraging lifelong learning. A significant innovation of the 2023 project was the implementation of incoming teaching mobilities in higher education, a first for our network in this sector — although already practiced in vocational education and training for several years. These mobilities enabled us to host European teaching professionals within our MFRs, bringing new pedagogical insights, enriching intercultural and professional exchanges, and exposing teams to diverse educational practices. They also helped overcome initial reluctance and better prepare our institutions to fully embrace the European dimension of higher education. Furthermore, the project emphasised the transmission of fundamental values such as solidarity, citizenship, and respect for diversity, while promoting the development of transversal skills that support both personal growth and professional integration. Particular attention was paid to ecological transition, through concrete actions such as raising awareness among learners, promoting green practices, organising eco-challenges, and evaluating the environmental impact of mobility. Finally, the project ensured the recognition and valorisation of skills acquired through mobility, through skills assessments and structured feedback, helping to professionalise learning pathways and firmly establish mobility as an essential part of the training experience. This project fully reflects the founding values of the Maisons Familiales Rurales: work-based learning, strong ties to local communities, openness to the world and to others, civic and associative engagement, and personalised support throughout each individual’s learning and life journey
