Objectives

The University of Limoges (Unilim) is one of the main Higher Education Institutions in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. As a multidisciplinary university, it operates across five sites, each located inside of the former Limousin region, and it offers more than 350 training programmes. It has over 17 000 students, and almost 2000 academic and administrative staff. The Erasmus+ programme and the development of European mobility have long been key drivers of the internationalisation of the institution’s activities, and it aims to contribute to the creation of a unified European Higher Education area, and to disseminate its values and expertise. According to its Erasmus+ strategy statement for the 2021-2027 programme, Unilim essentially seeks, through the implementation of its mobility projects, to: - Strengthen the knowledge and employability of its graduates, and enhance the quality of its training offer, - Amplify the dissemination of a multicultural and international approach within the governance and management of the intuition, especially through developing the mobility of all its staff, - Enable the diversification and intensification of exchanges between education, research and socio-economic and cultural actors, in order to promote excellency and regional development. More broadly, it aims at answering to two major strategic issues, while considering the principles and objectives of European programmes: - Reaffirm a relevant positioning within the vast Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, while fulfilling its role as a comprehensive university; - Respond to the new expectations assigned to the French and European higher education system, in addition to its traditional training and research missions: social and societal responsibility, collective insight into global challenges (UN sustainable development goals). The 2014-2020 programme saw a significant increase of Erasmus+ student mobilities within the institution (+15%, excluding COVID period). This trend has continued to grow over the first three years of the new programme, with participation increasing by more than 30%. The 2023 project supports this momentum by focusing on study mobilities (internship mobilities being covered by an Erasmus+ project led by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, on behalf of a consortium of institutions). The programme also includes staff mobilities, in an increasing proportion from a project to another. The project is aimed at all 11 academic departments of the university : the faculties of Law and Economic Sciences (FDSE), Arts and Humanities (FLSH), Science and Technology (FST), Medicine and Pharmacy, the University Institute of Technology (IUT), the IAE – University School of Management, the National Higher Institute for Teaching and Education (INSPE), the Institute for Preparation for General Administration (IPAG), the Institute for Training in Rehabilitation Professions (ILFOMER) and the Engineering School (ENSIL-ENSCI). They define their own objectives in terms of partnerships and mobility, within the framework set by the institution’s international strategy. Demand for European study abroad programmes comes mainly and on a recurring basis from: - Second-year engineering students (bac+4) from ENSIL-ENSCI, who are now required to complete at least one international mobility programme during their studies. - Third-year Bachelor’s and Master’s students from FLSH and FDSE, with a gradual expansion of the audiences and specialisations involved in mobility. - And, to a lesser extent, second- and third-year students from the University Bachelor’s in Technology programme, and those completing their first cycle in Medicine. Participation from the Faculty of Science and Technology is relatively low, due to the demand concentrated on internship mobility programmes. In practice, the expected outcomes of European mobility are multiple and go beyond simply enriching participants’ academic skills and improving their foreign language proficiency. It is also about helping them become more independent, exposing them to another culture and a different higher education system, and giving their studies a specific flavour that will help them integrate better into the professional world and society in general. This is why the university ensures to offer this opportunity to the wider audience possible, which is a key factor for its students, 60% of whom are from the Limousin region and more than 40% of whom receive scholarships. At the same time, the internationalisation of the educational offer resulting from the implementation of the project enables the university to develop its welcoming capacity and increase its attractiveness.
