Our institution aimed at offering students—future senior technicians—the opportunity to travel to a foreign country in order to acquire new professional and language skills, or to strengthen those they had already developed. This experience also sought to enhance their employability by allowing them to add an international internship to their résumé, through the acquisition and/or consolidation of a professional attitude (appearance, language proficiency, socio-cultural skills, etc.) within a European country. In addition, this internship raise their awareness of the diversity within the European Union and foster their understanding of the concept of citizenship and otherness . We also wanted to provide students from a highly disadvantaged neighborhood (in the poorest city of Réunion Island and one of the poorest in France), many of whom had never traveled abroad, with the opportunity to visit a European country. The goal was to foster in them a sense of belonging to a larger community—the European Union—and to help them overcome geographical, social, economic, and cultural isolation. This also allowed us to fully address the inclusion aspect of our project by explaining how Erasmus+ projects are funded, helping students gain a better understanding of the world around them while developing their awareness of concepts such as citizenship, solidarity, and interconnectedness. For some, this first time leaving the island was also meant to help them develop general life skills such as autonomy, teamwork, time management, stress management, problem-solving, communication, perseverance, and self-confidence. We chose to place the students with host families to reassure both the students and their families. This nurturing environment was intended to help them gain self-confidence and engage in discussions about cultural differences as well as similarities between their own cultures and that of the host country. This approach aimed to raise their awareness of the importance of diversity within the European Union as a way to combat all forms of discrimination and racism.
