Background

Drystone construction is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is a significant cultural heritage element that defines a region’s identity. It is found in many European countries. However, the recognition and management of this traditional craftsmanship vary greatly from one country to another. Drystone construction is widespread and often recognized, but not sufficiently valued. We have identified several types of needs: Access to dry stone training varies greatly from country to country; for example, in Croatia or Greece, there is no official training in dry stone construction. The know-how is primarily passed down orally. Raising awareness about more resource-efficient and waste-reducing ecological construction. In the context of the ecological transition, dry stone construction presents an opportunity for development and construction projects. Professionals and clients have little awareness of or training in the technical, aesthetic, and environmental possibilities offered by drystone. The socio-economic aspect must be better addressed. The drystone masonry trade is beginning to gain recognition in several countries and offers real employment opportunities that contribute significantly to the local economy.
