Background

This project addresses several current societal issues. The rise of conservatism and nationalism is challenging democratic foundations and encouraging the resurgence of discrimination. At the same time, the Covid-19 crisis exacerbated social and educational inequalities, undermining the sense of national and European belonging among some young people, while limiting their access to cultural and artistic activities. These developments also highlight the fragility of the principle of solidarity and the limitations of formal education alone in responding to these challenges. In light of these observations, several needs have been identified: supporting teachers with relevant training and educational resources; building bridges between formal and non-formal education; promoting the active participation of young people through popular education; ensuring equal access to inclusive citizenship and artistic education; promoting the European values of diversity and tolerance. These elements were highlighted in the Erasmus+ RAIN.BOW project report (2020) and at the Forum on the Future of Citizenship and Human Rights Education organised by the Council of Europe in 2022.
