Our goal was to raise awareness, train and equip local actors so that they could create welcoming, learning and working environments that are accessible to everyone. Through their commitment, retailers, trainers and Chamber of Commerce staff became key enablers in opening the world of rural commerce to people with disabilities — our indirect target group. Beyond training, we aimed to change mindsets and foster a lasting culture of inclusion, where every economic actor, regardless of size or location, contributes to building fairer, more supportive and more human territories. MINDFUL sought to go beyond practical tools by inspiring a collective movement toward empathy, accessibility and equal opportunity within rural communities. By empowering professionals at the local level, the project helped ensure that inclusion is not seen as an obligation but as a shared value — one that strengthens both businesses and communities. In this way, MINDFUL has laid the foundation for a sustainable, human-centered approach to rural economic development, where diversity becomes a true source of growth and cohesion.
We applied to the MINDFUL project to address the urgent need for professional inclusion of people with physical, hearing or visual disabilities in rural areas of Europe. These territories, often weakened by isolation and limited opportunities, nevertheless offer great potential through local retail businesses, which are true places of social connection and community life. MINDFUL was born from the conviction that everyone should be able to contribute fully to society, whatever their abilities. The project aimed to support local stakeholders (retailers, trainers and institutions) in implementing inclusive, accessible and sustainable practices. By promoting awareness, training and the exchange of good practices at the European level, we sought to build bridges between the world of disability and that of rural commerce. MINDFUL therefore responds to a deep societal need: to put people and equal opportunities back at the heart of local development. The MINDFUL project aimed to provide, in particular to employers in the retail sector, the necessary knowledge to facilitate the recruitment of people with disabilities, ensure the development of human resources and workplace adaptation, and create a supportive working environment.
