Objectives

The inter-municipal council of Île d'Oléron has observed that its young people face obstacles in terms of access to education, employment, training, healthcare, leisure activities, culture, and opportunities to connect with the wider world. These barriers to mobility are exacerbated by inadequate public transportation. The island's isolation further complicates matters for young people seeking to establish long-term residency. Our young people are receptive to Greta Thunberg's appeals but are unable to participate because they live too far from major urban centers. Similar observations have been made by the community of Majorca, a Spanish island, and also by Namur, a Belgian municipality located far from any major industrial development. The aim of this 2023 campaign is to observe and assess the impact of climate change on the local area and the world. It seeks to move beyond overly academic and moralizing awareness campaigns to adopt a more inclusive approach: learn to understand, understand to get involved, get involved to mobilize and act, and act to encourage public response. The project fostered youth involvement, openness to others, intercultural exchange, and the acquisition of new skills and knowledge through non-formal activities, thereby developing young people's social capital, autonomy, and capacity to actively participate in society. The issue of climate impact on young people's communities was addressed through meetings and their participation in awareness-raising activities to broaden their understanding and cultivate their interest in this topic. The objective was to strengthen their skills and encourage their active citizenship. The various partners contributed to achieving this objective. Indeed, the local stakeholders and professionals with whom we worked were directly affected by the impact of climate on the region's development. Through hands-on experience and dialogue, they raised awareness among young people about protecting local flora and fauna and promoting more responsible use of the environment. The involvement of young people in developing an awareness campaign for a specific audience was essential to reinforcing the meaning of this project. To carry out this project, the following were organized: 2 youth exchanges and a mobility program for youth workers 1 theme for the exchange with Mallorca: Living without waste 1 theme for the exchange with Namur: Let's not drown OBJECTIVES of the JRT participants: to develop a network, find partners and acquire tools, become familiar with European programs, and foster the development of concrete projects 1 central theme: civic engagement and local democracy among young people
