The project “Enhancing the Dialogue Between Nationalism and Multiculturalism” was generally initiated to counter the spread of nationalism that has taken over many cultures in Europe and its high influence on the youth. In this case, the project aimed at fostering cultural rights, intercultural learning, and dialogue across the youth from France, Hungary, Turkey, Poland, and Spain. Participants has showcased the growth levels of nationalism across Europe, which have had a harmful effect on social inclusivity, human rights, and cultural diversity as a whole. The project’s objectives were ultimately fulfilled by a youth exchange event that took place in Noisy Le Grand, Paris. Specifically, the event involved 35 young participants, for a total of 8 days, with 2 additional days being dedicated to travel. Of particular note was the fact that all of the latter countries witnessed immense growth in nationalism over the last decade. The project’s objectives were to: a 1. Strengthen people’s understanding of the importance of cultural rights and intercultural learning-dialogue as powerful instruments to avert ethnic conflicts and radicalization among the youths. b 2. Raise the citizens’ appreciation of the power and potential of youth-run programs in dissuading nationalism and promoting intercultural dialogue at the community level in multicultural nations. c 3. Align and develop the citizens’ participatory culture that embraces cultures and other nations, thereby fostering a more cohesive and tolerant society. d 4. Promote the youth in every facet of the quest for cultural rights and intercultural learning-dialogue as a possible way to counter nationalistic rhetoric and violence, as well as hate speech/criminality. e 5. Support and promote the youth’s entry into socio-political activities as a form of leadership and implementation of cultural rights and intercultural learning-dialogue. These objectives were effectively achieved through workshops, discussions, and activities undertaken as a way of promoting intercultural understanding, challenging divisive narratives, and empowering young people to act as change-makers for diversity and inclusion within their communities. It is through such activities that the project helped raise awareness of the necessity for intercultural dialogue and nationalism as a factor harming human rights, social justice, and cultural diversity in Europe. The objectives of the project emerged from a shared recognition of the challenges posed by the rise of nationalism in France, Hungary, Turkey, Poland, and Spain. Despite their diverse cultural backgrounds and historical contexts, these nations have witnessed a resurgence of nationalist sentiments in recent years. This shared experience served as a catalyst for the project's objectives, as stakeholders recognized the need to address common issues arising from nationalist discourse. Participants prioritised the protection of cultural rights by developing intercultural dialogue beyond nationalist divisions. They engaged themselves with developing youth-led activities opposing the processes of nationalist narrations while amplifying voices to include all. Most importantly, the culture of inclusion and respect for all cultures should be created to counter the divisive rhetoric of nationalists and further forbearance. Youth should be provided with tools to challenge the nationalistic speech, too. Youth civic engagement aimed to help people understand each other better and cooperate across cultural borders, making societies more inclusive. Generally speaking, the project objectives demonstrated a collective understanding of the issues facing nationalism in participating countries. The issues that the project addressed came with universal concerns to promote shared values of inclusivity, diversity, and respect, in order to mitigate the effects of divisional nationalism and create a more cohesive, tolerant society.
