For eleven days, 36 young people aged between 15 and 20 met as part of a youth exchange in Réunion. They came from Belgium and Réunion Island. They exchanged views on water. The sustainable management of water is more than ever at the heart of human concerns because of its rapid depletion. But to bring about change, we need to raise awareness of the current water situation and the dangers of water depletion. The overall aim of our youth exchange was to raise awareness among young people of the need to preserve water. Doing this project on Reunion Island also enabled us to dispel all preconceived ideas about this island paradise. Although the island is surrounded by water (sea), is watered by rain and has magnificent waterfalls and rivers, the quantity of water is beginning to diminish considerably. Like everywhere else in the world, water depletion is becoming a serious problem. Our target audience is young people. Young people are the most effective messengers of all. So to reach the whole family, you have to go through them. They will share the good attitudes they have adopted towards water with their friends and family. It is much more difficult to raise awareness among adults. We all have our own ways of seeing things, our own cultures and even our own habits. And it's extremely difficult to change all that. During this project, the participants learned about water pollution and its impact on the environment and health. They met with water professionals, interviewed local people and tried out fun tools to raise awareness among young children. They set up fun workshops on water for a young audience. This water project helped to answer questions such as: What different uses do we make of water, at school and at home? What do we know about how much water we use in our daily lives? Which items consume the most water? Where does the water that flows from our taps come from? What is ‘drinking’ water ?
