The project was an answer for many bad happenings across the globe that we were surrounded by. The global pandemic made people more distant. We were hearing more and more about natural disasters and catastrophes. War in Ukraine is a disturbing issue that occupies people’s minds. These are the times that we should stand united, thus educating our youth to live in unity, cultivating diversity and tolerance while understanding their heritage. Through this project young people developed new skills and learned about their own heritage through HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) and HMB Soft (Historical Medieval Battle). As youth workers who are constantly looking for new ways to work with our communities, we discovered that this new innovative way to approach community members, especially young people with fewer opportunities, helped establish connection, to include them in our activities, to raise their awareness on certain issues connected to physical activity and healthy lifestyle. With this project we developed participants’ competencies in the area of HEMA and HMB Soft and competencies of the participants to develop their bodies and spirit, strategic thinking and to shape them into skills. Participants were introduced to athletic self-development and they obtained and improved the skills needed for HEMA and HMB Soft. Through the activities, participants raised their self-esteem and self-confidence about their own art and interests and their charisma and self-presentation skills were strengthened. Depending on the level of participants, they gained or improved their skills in HEMA and HMB Soft and developed a positive relationship with their teammates, that is in line with European values. The project equipped the participants with skills on how to use athletic self-development and healthy body and spirit to combat the current issues that the societies are facing, like discrimination, hate speech, inequality, conflicts and more. Participants increased their competencies in teamwork, leadership, communication, conflict management through participation in various non-formal based activities in intercultural settings. Moreover, the participants gained knowledge of Erasmus+ Programme, especially Key Action 1, and were provided with an opportunity to brainstorm and work on development of new project ideas responding to the needs of participants’ peers and community. We used the established methods and activities commonly used in the field of HEMA and HMB Soft and we had professionals in this field to present the activities and train the youngsters in a safe environment. HMB Soft is a martial art for young athletes who use safe (soft) equipment: a sword, a shield and, of course, armor. The equipment for HMB Soft is mainly manufactured by authorized HMBIA partners and passes a multi-stage system of quality and compliance checks. Participants learned how to create their own soft-weapons and they could see, touch and use the hard-equipment to some extent in a safe environment. Participants learned basic movements for defense and attack with the soft weapons, also they had been trained in archery. These kinds of activities, which are unusual especially for Erasmus+ project, but also not easily accessible in every corner of the world, made participants feel that they are part of something special and they learned unique skills which activated their creativity and curiosity to try even more in the future.
