Murathens European Weeks is a project run by youth, first as an informal group, then as an association, the eponymous Murathens Association. The project is supported by a group of Cantal actors in France, around the town of Aurillac, and in Cyprus, with its capital Nicosia. We questioned in a practical, real-life way how the individual musical heritage of the young participants is grasped and (re)appropriated by other young people of the same generation but from different places, cultures and experiences. Music as a catalyst of identities, of the “particular” and the “common”, has thus enabled, through sharing, practice and intercultural encounters, the production of common creations, self-realization and better living together “beyond borders”. In this way, the Murathènes European Week 2024 project has confronted, through music and youth, the societal challenges of openness to others, the integration of minorities (rural youth, refugees, unaccompanied minors, isolated or “prevented” groups), the enhancement of territories and their cultural heritage, the fight against exclusion, the commitment of young people and sustainable development. Thanks to partners in Cyprus (Sistema Cyprus and its network) and Cantal (cultural and musical associations, high schools, popular education associations, institutions, etc.), participants, volunteers and adult supervisors were able to exchange ideas, learn and share experiences. Musical practice enabled all the participants to meet across linguistic and cultural barriers, to experience moments of joy around playful activities and daily life. This project between young people from Europe and around the world was intended to make an active, lively and concrete contribution to the Erasmus + challenges of a more inclusive, civic-minded, supportive and sharing Europe.
