Objectives

In implementing the Breaking the NEET Cycle (BNC) project, our aim was to address the significant challenges faced by young people in today's labour market, challenges that have been exacerbated by the rise of automation, globalisation and the gig economy. These developments have resulted in higher youth unemployment rates and precarious employment conditions for young workers, who often find themselves in temporary positions or earning low wages. This situation has contributed to the increasing prevalence of NEETs - people aged 15-24 who are not in employment, education or training - across the European Union. With the NEET rate for young people aged 20-34 set to reach 16.5% by 2022, and even higher in some countries, there was an urgent need to take action to promote youth employment and reduce the number of NEETs. The project aimed to equip youth workers with the essential skills and training tools to effectively support NEETs. Recognising the vital role of youth workers in creating opportunities for young people, we sought to enhance their ability to provide voluntary activities that could help NEETs take the first step towards employment or further education and training. This was underpinned by an understanding that although youth work has untapped potential to develop new resources and solutions for NEETs, youth workers are often challenged by a lack of understanding of the concept of NEET, the realities of young people in NEET situations and a lack of effective tools to address these issues. In addition, the project aimed to create better opportunities for young NEETs, enabling their active participation in society and integration into the labour market. The project sought to bridge the knowledge and awareness gap among youth workers on how to support young people in NEET situations, thus creating an environment in which NEETs could develop the necessary skills and confidence to navigate the labour market or pursue further education. The BNC project aimed to address the systemic issues leading to high NEET rates by improving the skills of youth workers. Through targeted training and the development of new tools, the project aimed to have a tangible impact on the lives of young NEETs, supporting their transition from education to employment and promoting their full participation in society.
