Objectives

The objective of the European Meeting of Young Lusodescendants on the theme of “Employability in Europe: Digital technology for ecology and youth inclusion” was to enhance youth workers’ skills in supporting young people, especially those with fewer opportunities. On one hand, the aim of this project was to contribute to the capacity building and professional development of socio-educational facilitators and their organizations. Therefore, it allowed to enhance the understanding their approach towards the participants and thus have improve their effort with the young people with whom they work daily. On the other hand, the project intended to expand the community of socio-educational animators that Cap Magellan and its network have been building for several years, in order to enhance and evolve the work of youth organizations. The implementation of informal and non-formal socio-educational activities took form of improvisation workshops, group reflection exercises, simulations, role plays, creative and artistic activities, field actions. The goal was to provide young people with valuable skills and tools to help them enter the labour market and develop their professional career. In parallel to these workshops, the participants were asked to design an entrepreneurial project to create a start-up: The start-up project should respond to local sustainable development issues, particularly social and environmental, while favouring the use of digital tools. This exercise was designed to put into practice the skills acquired during the Encounter. The final objective was the projects’ presentation to a jury of professionals. Young participants and socio-educational facilitators had numerous chances to exchange with several actors of the world of entrepreneurship; specially during the opening ceremony of the event, the visit of the incubator Startup Braga and the final presentation of the projects to the jury, allowing to the development of a network of professional contacts on a European scale. In addition, one of the fundamental objectives was to enable mechanisms for dialogue between young people, youth organisations and decision-makers, to foster the emergence of a common framework for reflection and the exchange of ideas and opinions on priorities that concern today’s youth. This was possible during the opening ceremony. The theme chosen for this 2023 edition also included several contemporary challenges that young people today face such as sustainable development, the rise of digital tools and new technologies, active citizenship and democratic participation. These questions were integrated and addressed during the various workshops and activities, in order to raise awareness among the young participants about these issues, to promote the sharing of knowledge on these topics and to push them to find solutions at their scale. The intention was to show young people that entrepreneurship and the labour market are not necessarily opposed to sustainable development and that digital technology appears today as a complementary tool to meet current challenges. Particular attention was also paid to the common values of the European Union, to the European identity and to democratic issues. Various non-formal learning workshops have sought to sensitize young participants to the functioning, objectives and challenges of the European Union. In addition, the Meeting as a whole pursued the European objectives for youth, namely “to mobilise, connect and empower”. Finally, as every year, Cap Magellan has paid particular attention to the values of equal opportunity and equal access, inclusion, diversity and equity, whether in the selection of participants, in the course of the activities or in the values transmitted during the event. This year’s edition included the participation of a young person with a motor disability. Moreover, as this is a European, and therefore, a multicultural project, respect for diversity was at the heart of this event. Thus, this Meeting has sought to reach the greatest number of young people and socio-educational animators, giving special importance to inclusion. A video presenting the pitch of the Start-up projects was also subtitled and broadcasted to allow those who were not present, as well as deaf and hard of hearing people to see the results produced by the young people at this event.
