Objectives

Project Overview: “SymPhysi- Integrative Training in Nature YouthWork” was conceived as an innovative training course, aimed at enhancing the professional development of youth workers by incorporating a comprehensive educational framework centred on regenerative and sustainable practices known as "Nature Work." The project emphasised working with, from, in and for nature, to foster an integrative and holistic approach to environmental sustainability and ecological responsibility. We aimed at the empowerment and upskilling of 20 informed, competent and highly versatile “Nature Youth Workers'' possessing a systemic understanding of Nature functions, with a clear impact on ecological restoration, combating climate change and reconnecting humanity and nature - towards the emergence of a more resilient and sustainable society. Aims and Needs: The project stemmed from an acute awareness of the growing disconnect between humanity and the natural world, underscored by rampant ecological degradation and the pressing need for systemic change. In response, SymPhysi sought to rekindle a symbiotic relationship with nature through youth work, using nature education as a transformative tool. This initiative recognized the necessity to cultivate a multifaceted skill set among youth workers that aligns with the principles of ecological restoration, climate change mitigation, and sustainable community engagement. Core Objectives Achieved: Educational Enrichment: Enhanced the knowledge base of youth workers by exploring ancient practices and a diverse range of educational working methods in nature, combined with contemporary ecological science, thereby boosting learning efficacy and broadening career horizons. Practical Training: Active learning through hands-on activities and non-formal educational tools, increasing the sense of initiative, fostering entrepreneurship, improving foreign language proficiency, and enhancing overall employability. Social and Cultural Interconnectivity: Increased cultural awareness, self-empowerment, self-esteem, empathy and integration of participants from various and diverse cultural, social and economic backgrounds, age and conditions, facilitating community resilience and collaborative initiatives through democratic and non-violent communication methods. Specific Project Actions: The course integrated four primary modules — Nature Education, Natural Farming, Natural Construction, and Eco-Community Building. Each module was designed to operate both independently and synergistically, ensuring a rich, integrative learning experience that equipped youth workers with the skills necessary to implement nature-based solutions effectively. Participants benefited from a dynamic exchange of ideas and practices at Free-Field ecofarm, a Permaculture garden and educational hub in Crete, and the adjacent Kariatzoules Forest School. This double venue served as both the canvas and catalyst for the envisioned transformative processes, encapsulating a live model of Permaculture as a holistic system. Alignment with Erasmus+ Objectives: The project directly aligned with the Erasmus+ focus areas of Environmental Sustainability and the Promotion of Democratic Life by: Encouraging active citizenship and civic participation through inclusive and sustainable practices. Facilitating intercultural learning and transnational collaboration, thereby enhancing the European and global outlook of participants. Empowering youth workers with innovative tools and methodologies that could be adapted to various socio-economic and environmental contexts, thereby amplifying the impact of EU Youth Strategy and contributing towards achieving the European Green Deal goals. Achievements: By the end of the SymPhysi course, participants emerged as 'Nature Youth Workers' — versed in ecological principles and ready to impart their knowledge and skills within their communities and beyond. The project successfully established a robust network of environmentally conscious youth workers across Europe and the Middle East, poised to act as catalysts for sustainable development and ecological stewardship.
