Objectives

The goals of the project were: 1. better understanding of human rights One of the ideas explored was that the origins of human rights was in Christianity, not Ancient Greece, because Ancient Greece and Rome were civilizations built on natural inequality between men and women and Greeks/Romans and barbarians. It is Christianity that has built its civilization on the idea of natural equality of souls - we are all equally fallen and we all equally strive for salvation, regardless of being man or women, black or white, rich or poor, Greek or Jew. This hypothesis was strengthened by analysing Quakers as pioneers in abolishing slavery, gender equality and even gay liberation. This also explains why Europe has been for centuries the dominant force in delevoping and protecting human rights. 2. better understanding European culture and history Participants learned why Europe has played a leading role in developing modern ideas of human rights, but also why there are differences within Europe in protecting human rights. Women's rights, LGBT rights and most other rights are generally better protected in countries with Protestant tradition. Participants have connected it to Protestant emphasis on individual freedom and responsibility. Human rights are also connected with democracy and capitalism, and countries that have pioneered these inventions (the UK, USA, the Netherlands, Switzerland) are also some of the countries with strongest human rights record.
