Objectives

After many years of community work, our association has realized the importance of sustainable urban development through youth work. As a community, we create spaces for people to discover, learn and experience all sorts of valuable things life provides. Some of those spaces/skills we wanted to bring closer to young people through implementing this project. Before applying for this youth exchange we talked to young people and asked them about their needs on the topic of sustainability. By implementing this project we wanted to support and engage young people in the process of being actively part of creating their future by providing them with the space, tools and experience. We wanted the participants to learn and discuss sustainability and how they can improve their lives through it. The approach was to display them the importance of small-scale changes as individuals. We also focused on the opportunity to share their needs and experiences with the other participants and to empower them. Bringing together participants from different cultures and backgrounds will have a positive affect as long as we could hold safe space for them to express. Our specific objectives were to raise more awareness on the topic of sustainability by discovering the term in its different aspects through a non-formal and informal way. Our objectives were to empower young people by supporting their ideas of sustainable alternatives. Besides focusing only on the individual support of their ideas we planned to introduce them to the importance of supporting also ideas of others. Additional objectives were to encourage young people to see differences not as a burden, but instead as a challenge to overcome. Differences can also be seen as something to celebrate and something that gives us new opportunities to become more open-minded and open-hearted, which will lead to more resilience. Overcoming differences can additionally support the great ideas of others and encourage individuals to go further and achieve their goals by bringing everyone along with them. A strong focus was on showing them how to become active, involved and responsible citizens on a personal, regional, national and European level, by feeling and experiencing their environment. The project referred to a holistic approach built on four pillars (ecological, social, cultural and economic sustainability). We wanted to experience these topics and discover the content with the participants so they get a good understanding of sustainability by referring to those four pillars. Concrete objectives were Green skills, Bridging intercultural, intergenerational and social divide Community development through the four pillars of sustainability: Ecological sustainability (improve ways to be more Ecological), Social sustainability (improve their social development and create an understanding of social sustainability), Cultural sustainability ( improve their understanding of their culture and the culture of others), Economic sustainability (understand the economic circle of sustainability and innovation)
