Objectives

There are numerous indicators that signal a threat to democracy in Europe. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine stands out as the most prominent among them, as it involves the defense of European democratic values and the well-being of the Ukrainian people. However, it is not solely the war that poses a challenge. In 2022, the European Commission acknowledged that rising extremism, election interference, the dissemination of manipulative information and threats against journalists are all challenges that democracy in the EU faces. This crisis seems to affect almost every nation. For instance, the protests in France back in 2018 against the increasing fuel prices, economic inequality and cost of living showcased a discontent that transcended borders. In Italy, the ruling party has ties to the fascist party and is supported by a coalition of anti-European and anti-immigration parties. Turkey, a NATO member, ranks 149th out of 180 countries in the 2022 World Press Freedom Index. Italy finds itself in a similar situation as Niger or Ghana, while Hungary (85th) and Serbia (79th) rank even lower than Kyrgyzstan (72nd) and Nepal (which is under a communist regime). Furthermore, according to a recent survey in January 2023, Italy has a dishearteningly low level of support for the EU, with only 46% in favor. Several factors contribute to the perceived danger to democracy, including economic crises, the war in Ukraine, the Russian threat, declining literacy rates, populism, limited youth participation in democratic processes and public life, extremism, centralization of power and many others. It is crucial to reinforce the foundations of democracy, which currently appear fragile and under attack from various forces and interests. In this regard, young people play a vital role, representing both the future and hope. Consequently, our focus is on initiating youth-led changes, as young individuals are key actors in addressing these challenges. - PROJECT OBJECTIVES - - To enhance participants' understanding and appreciation of democratic values. - To increase the involvement of young people in democratic and social life. - To help young individuals grasp the significance of a democratic system and the dangers that populism can bring, such as authoritarianism and totalitarianism. - To contribute to young people's comprehension of the European Union, its history, diversity, and the importance of remembrance, shared history, and common values. Through the planned activities, we have facilitated the development of essential soft skills among participants, including analytical and critical thinking abilities. Our aim was to enhance their sense of self-empowerment and self-esteem, foster an appreciation for diversity and encourage the use of dialectics as a proactive tool. Furthermore, we have addressed attitudes that undermine democratic values, such as fanaticism, intolerance, racism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, lack of social rights and inequalities, to name just a few.
