Objectives

Intolerances, stereotypes and discriminations connected with religious beliefs became increasingly frequent in Europe in the last years. In the project application form, we reported several statistics about it. On the other side, other statistics showed that youngsters were becoming less religious year by year, and they saw religion exactly like politics: something boring and far from them. "Youth and Religions" brought together in Nyiregyhaza youngsters from very different nations, religions and social backgrounds. Through the project’s activities and the application of non-formal learning methodology, we increased the level of involvement of the participants on the topic through activities such as debates, games, workshops, group-works and interaction with locals and stakeholders. We aimed to achieve various objectives, the most important were: to promote intercultural and interreligious dialogue; better understand the role of religion in society; raise awareness about the issue of social integration and the values of solidarity, tolerance and respect; promote participation in democratic life, active citizenship and international mobility for learning purposes. Through the daily activities, we tried to develop/enhance participants' analytical skills, critical thinking and cultural awareness, thanks to the discovery of new cultures, habits and lifestyles through the knowledge of religions. We aimed to understand and appreciate diversities and their different shades, teach to use dialectic as a proactive tool, transmit to them the importance of non-formal methodology and increase the sense of self-empowerment and self-esteem. The project was created primarily to demonstrate that, despite the recent years being characterized by negative news and events, religions are and should be instruments of peace and brotherhood, in which the various manifestations of diversity lead still all in a single direction (that all have a common denominator: the respect for others). Moreover, religions are also extraordinary containers of history, cultures, traditions, and folklore and they are also very precious for understanding people's identity.
