Objectives

In providing young people with the opportunity of youth exchanges this allows them to gain new culture and experience that they wont get in everyday life. This opportunity whereby they not only experience a new country and culture meeting new people but are taking through a learning process supported by their youth workers highlighting the many different learning moments throughout the process. If young people don't get this opportunity at a young age they might fall in to society norms. We felt that youth exchanges will support us in achieving this objective so we organised two youth exchanges within this projects round. Young people within Ringsend feel a sense of isolation towards their identify and were they belong. As the sense of been European rather than just Irish can get lost with young people who live in disadvantaged areas also the sense of solidarity gets lost as sometimes those who need it most can lose faith in what solidarity is. Gaining these international experiences allow them gain the sense that they can make a difference and as bad as they think their life might be they can still make a difference not only for themselves. In preparing the group for these youth exchanges and supporting them in recognizing their identity and the fact that they are not only Irish but European and allowing them the opportunity to explore this not only during the exchange process but in the planning and preparation stages. Allowing youth workers explore different practice within Europe to enhance their work with young people. Looking at youth work not only in Ireland but in other countries whereby we can share tools and methods to support our work. Having a team of youth workers who are experienced within a European working setting allows them to best work with young people in this setting contributing to the sense of belonging and unity that we what to achieve. We wanted youth workers to feel a sense of motivation and willingness to engage in European work. In organising a professional development activity whereby Irish youth workers get to experience other practice out side of Ireland that has a European dimention we hope that this will inspire them to build on this within their youth work practice and not only enhance their personal development but also their professional development.
