We aimed to improve the quality of support provided to children with autism by equipping preschool teachers with training and resources on evidence-based interventions. We also sought to raise awareness and increase understanding of autism among preschool teachers and the wider community through local awareness-raising events, strengthening inclusive practice. In addition, we aimed to empower teachers to deliver effective early interventions by developing and delivering a comprehensive training programme to enhance behaviour management skills and confident use of evidence-based strategies. Finally, we sought to reduce stress and burnout by providing the knowledge and tools teachers need to cope and be effective in their roles, supporting professional wellbeing and sustainability.
This project responds to a critical gap in accessible, evidence-based training for preschool teachers working with children with autism. Preschool educators play a vital role in early development and wellbeing, yet many lack specialised preparation in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). To bridge the gap between current practice and best practice, we developed an evidence-based ABA training package consisting of a comprehensive curriculum and a practical handbook. It provides hands-on learning across theoretical foundations, practical applications, and real-life case studies, equipping teachers to create positive, supportive and inclusive learning environments. To increase engagement and usability, the package is delivered in an innovative digital game-based format that supports self-paced learning. By investing in teachers’ professional development, we aimed to strengthen inclusive early years provision and improve educational outcomes for children with autism and their peers.
