Internationalisation has always been a cornerstone of the University of Galway’s strategic vision - shaping how we educate, research, and engage with the world. The University’s latest strategy, guiding our direction through 2030, places internationalisation at the heart of every goal, recognising its vital role in today’s interconnected society. Fittingly, the strategy is titled Of Galway, for the World. Our participation in the Erasmus programme, which began in 1988, exemplifies this enduring commitment. Erasmus continues to play a pivotal role in helping us realise our ambition for global impact. Today, we hold more than 270 Erasmus Inter-Institutional Agreements with partner universities across 21 European countries, and we are actively expanding this network of partnerships and exchanges. Participation in Erasmus+ plays a vital role in realising the University’s ambition to develop graduates and researchers who are globally minded, culturally aware, and equipped with the international experience that is increasingly valued by employers and essential for societal impact. Mobility opportunities for our students add considerable value to the academic journey. They deepen student engagement with their disciplines, broaden academic and cultural horizons, enhance language skills, and improve career readiness. We are continually developing ways to increase mobility in all fields, as well as implementing new ways to add mobility into programmes that have historically lacked such opportunities. Incoming Erasmus students also play a crucial role in enriching our campus community. Their presence enhances the classroom experience for domestic students, fosters intercultural dialogue, and helps embed a global outlook into everyday university life. For our staff, Erasmus mobility facilitates international collaboration, professional growth, and the sharing of best practices - all of which contribute to the ongoing enhancement of teaching, research, and institutional capacity in a sustainable manner. Additionally, through the ENLIGHT alliance, we serve on many different committees that are building an open, integrated system that supports seamless student and staff mobility across Europe. This project allows us to build on our ambitious global vision and bring these outcomes to life.
