Objectives

The main objective of the Erasmus+ KA131 project (Call 2023) was to broaden the international mobility opportunities available to students and staff at the University of Bergamo, while ensuring high quality, inclusiveness, and sustainability. This goal is fully consistent with the University’s Strategic Plan 2023–2027 (https://www.unibg.it/ateneo/chi-siamo/piano-strategico) and with its Erasmus Policy Statement (https://www.unibg.it/internazionale/andare-allestero/erasmus), which emphasize the importance of internationalization, equal access, and openness to cultural diversity. By implementing the project, UniBg aimed at consolidating its role as an institution that is open to multiculturalism, able to face global challenges with an international outlook, and committed to fostering growth based on the plurality of perspectives, the authority of academic and professional roles, and the merit of results. Erasmus mobility is therefore not only a tool for enhancing individual competences, but also a strategic driver for institutional innovation and positioning in the European Higher Education Area. Specifically, the project intended to: - Promote wider student participation in outgoing mobility by removing economic and social barriers as well as obstacles related to conditions of fragility. Both long-term and short-term mobilities were offered, in line with the principle of flexibility, so as to encourage participation by a more diverse student population. Additional financial support, provided through EU, national and university resources, ensured that students with fewer opportunities could access international experiences without discrimination. - Expand agreements for study and traineeship mobility, with a strong focus on strengthening language competences, digital skills, and employability. Particular attention was given to aligning mobility opportunities with the development of UniBg’s study programmes, which have grown significantly in recent years, thus ensuring a coherent and sustainable match between the academic offer and the mobility portfolio. - Increase the number of incoming students and staff by enhancing the multilingual dimension of UniBg. Alongside the growth of courses taught in foreign languages, the University provided a wide range of free Italian language and culture courses, as well as personalized services for international guests (housing support, dedicated desks, integration activities). These initiatives were designed to foster inclusion, academic success, and intercultural dialogue on campus. - Strengthen the strategy of double degree programmes, consolidating existing ones and expanding the portfolio in order to guarantee at least one structured international pathway in each Master’s degree course. Double degrees were seen as a high-impact instrument to raise the international profile of UniBg graduates, foster structured partnerships with universities worldwide, and generate long-term academic cooperation. - Enhance international cooperation networks, with a special reference to the European Alliance Bauhaus4EU, approved and funded under the 2024 Erasmus+ European Universities call. This strategic involvement aims at positioning UniBg as an active contributor in shaping innovative, sustainable, and inclusive higher education models at European level. Beyond these specific objectives, the project also pursued a broader mission: - Developing transversal skills (such as adaptability, teamwork, intercultural communication) for students, academic staff and administrative staff, thereby contributing to lifelong learning and to better employability in a global labour market. -Increasing the attractiveness and reputation of the University by strengthening the visibility of UniBg as a dynamic, international and welcoming institution, in line with its Strategic Plan’s vision of an “open, sustainable and inclusive university”. -Embedding sustainability and inclusion in mobility actions, with explicit alignment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 5 (Gender Equality), Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). -Reinforcing staff competences through training and teaching mobilities, thereby ensuring that internationalization is not limited to students, but becomes a shared institutional culture across all levels of the university community. In conclusion, the implementation of the KA131 project aimed to ensure that international mobility becomes a key enabler of UniBg’s transformation into a smart, inclusive, and sustainable university. By widening participation, enhancing the quality and relevance of learning opportunities, and embedding mobility into its academic strategy, UniBg sought not only to support the personal and professional growth of individuals, but also to strengthen its role as an engaged, innovative and responsible institution within the EHEA and the global academic landscape.
