The project aimed to achieve three main objectives. First, to educate students in inclusive communication by developing manuals on best and worst practices in language and imagery, helping them avoid stereotypes and recognize the importance of the words and images they choose to use. Second, to create spaces for dialogue and sharing, like the “Agora” sessions, where students could express their uniqueness and ultimately created greater empathy and mutual understanding among their classroom peers. Third, to transform these experiences into creative products, including the production of inclusive photographs and a digital exhibition, “I Am Your Mirror,” that represent and normalize diversity. The project sought to enhance digital competences through collaborative online research, content creation and the use of new technologies and tools. Through these activities, the project intended to reduce exclusion and bullying, promote equality and non-discrimination, and create schools that reflect the European values of respect and diversity.
We applied for this project to address the urgent need for social inclusion and awareness of diversity among secondary school students. Words and images are responsible for shaping perceptions, behaviors and the sense of belonging, especially in adolescence when teenagers are likely to experience difficulties with self-acceptance and acceptance by others. Exclusion and bullying often originate from misunderstanding differences or carrying prejudice. The MIRROR project aimed to tackle these issues by promoting inclusive language and communication, encouraging students to recognize and share their uniqueness, and building respect for each other’s diversity. It also supported digital transformation by engaging participants in creating digital manuals, using digital means for the production of photos and videos, and constructing an inclusive virtual exhibition. Students learned to value themselves and others, reduced discriminatory communication and developed digital and collaborative skills through research and creative expression. In this way, the project directly addressed the priorities of inclusion, equality, non-discrimination and digital skills development, creating more unified and inclusive school communities.
