Objectives

The project aimed to strengthen the capacity of higher education institutions to address the ethical, social, and environmental implications of digitalisation through education. Its primary objective was to develop, pilot, and validate innovative curriculum modules and a training toolkit that support critical thinking, ethical awareness, and sustainability-oriented digital practices among students and educators. The project sought to equip educators with adaptable teaching resources that can be integrated into existing programmes across disciplines, fostering responsible approaches to technology design, use, and governance. Another key objective was to raise awareness of the environmental footprint of digital technologies and the human impacts of digital systems, enabling learners to make informed and responsible decisions. Finally, the project aimed to disseminate its results at national and international level, encouraging adoption, transferability, and long-term sustainability of the educational outputs within higher education ecosystems.

Background

The project was developed to address the insufficient integration of ethical, social, and environmental perspectives in higher education curricula related to digital technologies. Although digital transformation is accelerating, students and educators often lack structured tools to critically reflect on the human and environmental impacts of digitalisation. Higher education institutions identified a need for accessible and adaptable curriculum content that supports responsible digital practices, sustainability awareness, and critical thinking across disciplines. The project responds to these needs by developing and piloting innovative curriculum modules and a training toolkit on ethical digitalisation and the environmental footprint of digital technologies, strengthening educators’ capacity and preparing future professionals for responsible participation in the digital economy.
