Objectives

In recent years the world went paperless. Online news and sources, and increasingly more social media platforms, have multiplied in the last decade. On the one hand this is encouraging as it democratises access to information and more so for young people who have born digital. At the same time it has become easier for false information to spread fast and easily. The impact on youth is big and we witness much of it across the Mediterranean Sea, whereby false and fake news (or misuse of information) impact young people's behaviours, attitudes, beliefs, civic engagement, and will have profound impact on decision-making processes for our societies as such youth become the leaders of tomorrow. Youth can be victims of bad use of information -in its various forms- and even be partly unaware but youth are also a key resource against fake news. Young people can be at the forefront of a more informed society that uses better information channels for inclusion and respect for diversity while being able to fight back mal-information, misinformation, disinformation and fake news. Understand the implications, using various gaming techniques and role plays to address the (unwanted) consequences of hate or violent speech and overall extremism is a powerful means to work from the premise of awareness. Against this background the Project aimed at two intertwined outcomes: (i) increase awareness on the magnitude of the issue and its consequences by sharing stories and experiences of various youth across the Mediterranean and (ii) learn how to effectively work on and by social media platforms and other media to counteract on fake news and address hate speeches. Such sharing and training took place in the context of a small town in outer Rome (Palestrina) whereby interaction with the locals was an integral part of the experience design, to help genuine dialogue with local institutions and people, who are less used to interact with Arab world.
