Objectives

The project aimed to improve the quality and effectiveness of online teaching and learning in higher education by addressing both pedagogical and emotional aspects of e-learning. Specifically, it sought to: * Raise awareness among HE academics and staff about the importance of emotional management in online teaching and its impact on student motivation and engagement. * Develop skills, knowledge, and competencies of HE staff to enhance the quality of online courses, prevent drop-out, and increase student involvement. * Support students’ adaptation to e-learning, helping them better cope with the psychological challenges of online education. * Create innovative tools and training solutions, including an assessment tool, training packages, and online resources, to provide practical support for both staff and students. Overall, the project aimed to contribute to a more engaging, inclusive, and effective e-learning environment in higher education.

Background

We applied for this project to address the growing challenges faced by higher education (HE) staff and students in adapting to online teaching and learning environments. The rapid shift to e-learning, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, revealed significant gaps not only in digital skills but also in emotional management, motivation, and engagement. HE academics often experienced stress, reduced interaction with students, and difficulties maintaining student motivation, while students struggled with isolation, low engagement, and adaptation to online formats. Existing initiatives mainly focused on technical skills, leaving a clear need for support in the psychological and emotional dimensions of e-learning. The project addressed these needs by developing tools and training to help HE staff better understand and manage emotions in online teaching, improve teaching quality, and enhance student engagement. At the same time, it supported students in adapting to e-learning environments. Overall, the project responded to a real and shared need across partner countries to improve the quality and effectiveness of online education through a more holistic, human-centred approach.
