Objectives

In 2020, the EU produced 505 kilograms of municipal waste (including food, wood, paper, textiles, plastics, and rubber) per person. Less than half of this waste, 47.8%, was recycled. The remainder of the waste was either buried or incinerated. The Commission estimated that 600 million tons of such waste could be reused. Transforming waste into resources was seen as a crucial step in achieving a circular economy. Lithuania (LT) saw an increase in municipal waste from 387 kg per person in 2005 to 483 kg in 2020, with only 45.1% being recycled. Slovakia (SK) experienced a rise from 273 kg to 433 kg per person, with 42.2% being recycled. Hungary (HU) managed to slightly reduce its municipal waste production to 403 kg, with a recycling rate of 32%. Romania (RO) reduced its waste production from 383 kg to 287 kg, but only 13.7% was recycled. Portugal (PT) increased its waste production from 452 kg to 513 kg, surpassing the EU average, with a recycling rate of 26.5%. All the participating countries were below the EU27 average recycling rate of 47.8%. By launching the European Green Deal, the European Union made significant efforts to reduce waste and emissions, aiming to make Europe the world's first climate-neutral continent. It recognized the crucial role of schools, training institutions, universities, and other youth organizations in educating young people, their parents, and the wider community about the necessary changes for successful transformation. Our KA1 Erasmus+ program, prioritizes the environment and combating climate change, also emphasized Europe's green transition. The motivation for organizing this project arose from the lack of recycling information among the target group and the need to link young people's active citizenship with recycling efforts. Nearly 600 youths participated in a survey posted on a Discord server created with partners to promote non-formal education, youth work, and the Erasmus+ program. Only 21% of young people recycled at home; 54% had seen different recycling bins in schools, universities, and shops but were unsure how to use them; and 89% admitted they had a poor understanding of collective waste and recycling. At the time, none of the project's participating organizations had a structured plan to promote the importance of waste collection and recycling among young people. This project raised awareness of the European Green Deal's new growth policy and strategy in recycling by equipping individuals with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to understand the importance of recycling and to act as active citizens through participation in recycling schemes and waste reuse, from the micro-level of their friends and family circles to the national level. Goal which was met: Promoted and encouraged the link between environmental protection and active citizenship through selective collection systems and waste reuse (3R – reuse, reduce, recycle) for 41 participants from 5 countries: LT, SK, HU, RO, and PT. Objectives reached: 1. Educate: Educated 41 participants from 5 partner countries around Europe about selective collection systems and the (3Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle). 2. Explain: Explained the concept of active citizenship and its relationship to environmental protection to 41 participants from 5 nations: Lithuania, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Portugal. 3. Enable: Enabled behavioral changes for 41 participants, fostering preferences and habits towards an environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyle.
