Erasmus+ projects play a significant role in supporting the internationalization of Vidzeme University of Applied Sciences (ViA) and contribute to the improvement and modernization of higher education in the European Union, Latvia, and the region. In implementing this project, ViA aimed to achieve several key objectives. The main ones were to promote the internationalization of the university, provide international study and mobility opportunities for students and staff, and strengthen global partnerships. Through the Erasmus+ programme, ViA sought to enhance participants’ academic and professional competences, foster cultural exchange, and align the university’s educational offer with European standards. In addition, the project focused on regional development, the promotion of digital transformation, and contributing to the green transition in the academic environment. By organizing and implementing two BIPs, the objective was to improve the knowledge and skills of ViA and partner universities’ doctoral students in using open data to address environmental and social challenges and to advance research, as well as to strengthen the competences of ViA and partner universities’ staff and students in the field of digital hygiene (digital security). One programme included workshops, seminars, and presentations on cybersecurity, strengthening security practices, and applying effective digital practices in business to address the challenges of regional entrepreneurs, while the other focused on the application of open data to solve interconnected environmental and social challenges, promoting research, innovation, and international cooperation. ViA students and staff also had the opportunity to participate in various BIPs abroad and improve their academic knowledge and professional skills in a range of topical areas. In implementing this project, ViA also provided support to staff and students from partner universities in Ukraine by coordinating and facilitating incoming student and staff mobilities. This promoted their integration into the international academic environment, fostered the acquisition of new knowledge and skills, strengthened cooperation between ViA and partner universities, and provided meaningful support in these globally challenging circumstances. The project also included outgoing staff mobilities, which enabled ViA academic staff to work on site and jointly develop a master’s study programme together with partner universities from Austria and the Netherlands in the field of Virtual and Augmented Reality – “Gamified Reality Applications for Real-World Challenges and Experiences”. This programme provides students with the opportunity to acquire knowledge for designing and implementing advanced Extended Reality (XR) solutions, incorporating gamification elements. Overall, the project was designed to align with ViA’s strategic goals, which include internationalization, innovation in education, and fostering a global perspective among students and staff.
