Objectives

The main objective of the DAP-2 project was to develop assessment tools adapted to the needs of 4-5 year old children, in order to be able to detect any possible developmental disorders. In addition, we wanted to support preschool teachers and parents with a convenient tool to use in their daily work with children. DAP-2 wanted to improve the quality of preschool education, as it is very important to be able to identify developmental delays and warning signs and to promote early intervention in order to support these children, to help them have equal opportunities to learn and to show their full potential. The awareness of teachers and other professionals, parents and wider audience about specific learning difficulties, especially dyslexia, had to be increased. They should be able to recognize the warning signs that indicate that a child needs closer observation and intervention. It is very important to understand that early intervention in case of possible difficulties or disorders can improve a child's cognitive and emotional development, improve his or her self-regulation and later, when that child starts attending school, improve his or her academic achievements.

Background

One of the most common specific learning difficulties is dyslexia - a difficulty in the acquisition of reading and writing that is neurological in origin. It can affect anyone, regardless of mother language or culture. According to the European Dyslexia Association, dyslexia affects 25 million of population in Europe. However, despite these significant numbers of affected people, reading disorders are often detected late. These children are sometimes considered lazy, as they lack motivation and interest in what is too hard for them. Thus, it is vitally important to notice any disorders and difficulties as early as possible, to be able to apply strategies for dealing with them as efficiently as possible. Thus, project team considered that creating an online assessment tool that would help preschool teachers and parents to notice any deficits in the areas important for the future study process would increase the possibility of early intervention. Besides, pedagogical materials created within DAP-2 (Exercise Book adapted to the specific needs of children at the age of 4-5) will be a significant supporting tool in this early intervention process.
