Objectives

The general aim of this project was to contribute to improvement of quality and innovation in youth work by developing professional competencies of 24 people that work with youth to apply kinesthetic learning as a tool and approach in non-formal settings to promote young peoples’ empowerment and more active engagement. Project brought together educators from youth field and contemporary dance from such countries as Estonia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Spain, and Turkey to explore the power of kinesthetic learning, based on non-formal education in the work with young people. The expected outcome was interdisciplinary national teams, consisting of experts in movement and youth work field, that cooperate in future to implement non-formal kinesthetic learning activities for young people, having new, effective ways to support young people. Learning through movement promotes awareness of the body's intelligence and knowledge. It is a very powerful tool opening new "channels" and “connections” in learners, generating new feelings, thoughts and helping people to become more open, self-aware, creative and to realize their full potential. Through body we project and receive a lot of information that can be useful for personal and social development, but only if we are conscious about how to use it. Together as a group experiencing the power of kinesthetic learning in different ways and reflecting about it, participants of the project tackled following themes/questions: -Why learning through the body is usually so powerful tool? -How does it help us to connect to ourselves and be authentic? - How does kinesthetic learning create the connection in the group and can bring the creativity and group relationship on a totally another level? -How to connect this whole experience to real life and use kinesthetic learning as a tool for youth empowerment?! -How to encourage young people to grow up as conscious individuals and be good and caring members of society?! The project invited the educators from dance and youth work to cooperate and, using each of their strengths, jointly to develop new methods of working with youth. The group consisted of 24 participants from 6 countries. The delegation from each country was composed of people from 2 different fields: dance/movement educators (contemporary dance, improvisation, theatre, parkour, etc.) and teachers and youth workers. It was of great value to bring people from different sectors together and provide a learning space to explore and exchange knowledge and good practices. Everybody could contribute to the process with her/his strength and develop a weaker side of self in a supportive space. Dance/movement educators were able to add more “social dimension” to their work, understand better the essence of youth work and how to support young people and youth workers became more aware how to use body and movement-based practices in non-formal learning as a conscious tool. Being aware of the fact that in a such short time it is impossible to acquire knowledge and skills of another field to implement them for young people in a high quality, the project was structured so, that experts from both fields of the same country could meet, experience the same process together, establish trust, learn from each other, bring ideas together to create their own content for young people and develop the cooperation also in future. They also had to work together by implementing follow-up workshops in their communities. The objectives of the project were: - to provide a space for educators from different fields (dance and non-formal education providers) to meet, learn from each other and network. The collaboration aspect worked in several layers: people met from two fields internationally, being able to use both their professional differences as well as cultural diversity; Participants collaborated also in national level – bringing both fields together, which allowed them to focus more on their specific realities; And as individuals people had to build a group to be able to create a safe space for genuine explorations and exchange of thoughts and ideas; – to explore different kind of practices and tools from contemporary dance, improvisation and nonformal learning field (indoors and outdoors) that involve kinesthetic learning and could be used with young people. It was opportunity for participants to learn from experienced professionals but also participants shared their skills and knowledge, offering meaningful movement activities besides scheduled activity time, for example Flamenco, Contact Improvisation, L’art du deplacement parkour, yoga.; - to engage in discussions on how to promote young people's empowerment, connection and encourage them to become more caring and active members of society; - to develop skills of designing and facilitating kinesthetic non-formal learning activities; - to plan and implement follow-up activities, implemented by each delegation in their countries.
