The project was designed to address the need for systemic and meaningful participation of high school students in decision-making processes within North Macedonia’s educational system. Recognizing gaps in student engagement and collaboration between stakeholders, the initiative aimed to create sustainable structures and foster a culture of democratic governance in schools. The project had three primary objectives: Building Capacities for Democratic Participation: The project sought to equip high school students, teachers, and administrators with the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to actively engage in democratic decision-making processes. Through hands-on experiences such as training sessions, simulations, and participatory events, participants were empowered to understand and navigate the dynamics of school governance effectively. Strengthening Communication and Collaboration: By improving the interaction between student councils and school administrations, the project aimed to bridge the gap in communication, ensuring that students’ voices are heard and valued in school decision-making. The development of co-management structures was a key element, providing a platform for collaborative governance and fostering mutual respect among stakeholders. Advocating for Meaningful Participation: The project placed a strong emphasis on advocacy to embed participatory practices within the broader educational framework of North Macedonia. By engaging policymakers, school leaders, and civil society organizations, the project aimed to influence policies and practices, ensuring that student participation becomes an integral part of school decision-making. Through its innovative approaches, including simulation games, training programs, and stakeholder consultations, the project aspired to create a lasting impact by cultivating a new generation of students equipped with the skills to lead and contribute meaningfully to their school communities. The initiative also sought to establish a model for participatory governance that could be scaled and adapted across other high schools, fostering a culture of inclusivity, democracy, and shared responsibility in the education system.
