Objectives

With this project we wanted to create conditions for advancing STEM education in the covered schools, by implementing innovative teaching methodologies (Problem Based Learning i.e. PBL & Design Thinking) in solving existing environmental issues, building the capacities of teachers to use these approaches in their subjects and establishing three Green Fab Labs in the covered schools. At the same time, the project aimed at stimulating youth contribution & participation in resolving existing community issues. Specific objectives included: SO1: Establishing and equipping of 3 schools’ fabrication labs (Green Fab Labs), one in each of the covered schools/countries. SO2: Raising capacities of teachers to implement innovative teaching methodologies and new technology in development of STEM skills in students. SO3: Raising awareness on environmental issues and boosting youth participation in solving community environmental problems. SO4: Incite cross-sectoral cooperation and participation of the business sector / start-ups in developing entrepreneurial skills and mindset among youth. The project put specific focus on environmental challenges and green solutions to these existing local community problems.

Background

Our project's purpose was to help improve STEM education and link it with real-life community issues. Analyzing the needs, we identified that in order to improve the educational process, multileveled approach is needed, namely: improving the conditions for modernized education (new technologies, better resources and tools), building the capacities of the teaching staff (for application of new teaching approaches for developing 21st century skills), increasing the motivation of students to engage (by seeing the real value) and connecting the education with real-life application i.e. solving real community problems. When it comes to STEM skills and practical learning through real project testing and implementation, most of the schools in North Macedonia, Greece & Poland lag in comparison to the available methods and models that can both accelerate the learning process & skills development, as well as create real impact in the local communities. On the other hand, this kind of education is important because its builds crucial skills and competences in students for real life challenges. Moreover, the project focused on one of the most burning issues in the world today - environmental challenges, preparing young people to address them.
