Objectives

In its strategic plan for 2019 – 2023, JCI Malta has indicated that it wants to provide space where young people can develop into leaders and be agents of positive change. That is doing things differently leading to beneficial outcomes. This aim was shared by all the partner organisations involved in this project. JCI organisations aspire to provide their members with the opportunity to, among others, develop leadership skills and social responsibility for the advancement of the individual and the community in general. The organisations involved in this project wanted their members to challenge the status quo. This, together with JCI Malta's intention to work within the Active Citizen Framework (ACF) spurred us to apply for this project and implement it within the Erasmus+ framework. Just like the ACF, Erasmus+ provides the methodology for taking grassroots action that engages stakeholders across all sectors to build sustainable solutions addressing a community’s most urgent need and ultimately creating sustainable impact. One of the most pressing needs that all organisations in this project have underlined are situations of bullying. Bullying is the moment when someone is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more people (Olweus, 1997). Moreover, bullying is considered part of aggressive behavior and has some very specific characteristics and actions: - Violent behavior that occurs without apparent motivation and is intended to disturb and cause discomfort to the other, - It is repetitive and endures over time, - There is a clear asymmetry of power that can be physical and /or psychological. There are different types of bullying such as that happening with peers, at the workplace or online. Amongst other things, bullying leads to low self-esteem as well as prolonged effects to the psychological well-being. This project’s aim was thus to target and prevent bullying by providing youth workers and leaders and ultimately the young people that we work with, with new and added competences to develop leadership skills. Constructive leadership styles using relational communication have been found to reduce the risk of bullying. This project therefore targeted bullying and leadership through the following objectives: 1. Going over and discussing the different types of bullying such as cyber-bullying and bullying at the workplace 2. Understanding and deconstructing stereotypes 3. Influencing self-esteem, increasing self-awareness as well as fostering positive thinking for psychological safety 4. Developing resilience and coping mechanisms by underlining the importance of mental health 5. Addressing leadership styles and behavioural analysis as well as tackling important leadership qualities such as effective communication and managing conflict.
