Objectives

Based on the social responsibility and mission of the Marnix Academy, the development of global citizenship is emphasized in order to build a just and sustainable society (Marnix Academy, 2022). In the academic year 2024-2025, a broad vision on institutional level was developed and a new vision and policy for internationalization was created. The Marnix Academie sees internationalization as a powerful tool for contributing to the development of professionals in education who do justice to the diversity in society, are aware of their role, and actively contribute to a just and sustainable world. Connection is at the heart of the vision on institutional level (Marnix Academy, 2025): connection with others, the world, and yourself. Getting to know others and the world, and establishing connections confirms the importance of internationalization. Our society is changing. Demographic shifts, technological innovation, ecological developments, and cultural and social diversity are making the field of education more complex ánd more riche. One of Marnix's promises is that we will explore and cross boundaries. This can take place both figuratively and literally, and thus internationalization and international competencies play a key role in connecting people in a changing society and complex world. The Marnix Academie is committed to creating an open learning environment in which everyone feels welcome, seen, and appreciated. Inclusivity is our aim: we want to make space for different perspectives. Students and (education) professionals develop themselves in dialogue with each other, the professional field, and the world. We encourage interprofessional learning, (international) collaboration, and critical reflection. As a UNESCO university of applied sciences, we are inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals. During their training, education professionals are encouraged to engage with the unknown through internationalization activities. By (further) developing international competencies, they are increasingly able to engage in dialogue and stay connected in both international and local contexts. Internationalization plays a role at the Marnix Academie not only in education, but also in further professionalization and research. Professionalization transcends one's own practice and requires collaboration and learning across different disciplines, organizations, and countries. Lessons can be learned from perspectives from all over the world, both far away and nearby. Conducting joint research within partnerships offers many opportunities for the Marnix Academie. International partnerships can provide an indispensable perspective. An international component enriches research with diverse perspectives and may reveal blind spots. The results of research from this international collaboration then contribute to our own educational practice. The Marnix Academie describes the wish, ambition, and objectives to train (future) education professionals and employees to become professionals who are able to look beyond borders, empathize with other perspectives, and act consciously in a changing, global society. At the core of this are elements such as an open and value-oriented attitude, cultural (self) awareness, cultural receptivity, multi-perspectivity, forming meaningful relationships, and the ability to place complex issues in an international context. International experience plays a crucial role in this, both abroad and at home. A summary of the vision on internationalization is as follows: Internationalization at the Marnix Academie is the intentional process of integrating an international, intercultural, and global dimension, with the aim of: o increasing the quality of education and research; o challenge education professionals to get to know others, the world, and themselves through connection; o stimulate the development of global citizenship in order to build a just and sustainable society. Internationalization is therefore an integral part of education, professional development, and research at Marnix Academie. The Marnix Academie can implement and realize these objectives through Erasmus+.
