Objectives

Our primary goal was to enable more inclusive HE leadership. We pursued five objectives: 1) ENHANCE knowledge on leadership barriers through rigorous investigation. 2) ENABLE current leaders to become institutional changemakers by equipping them with tools to mitigate bias. 3) EMPOWER aspiring leaders from underrepresented groups with the external engagement skills and cultural capital needed for career advancement. 4) ESTABLISH a mentorship community to facilitate inter-generational peer exchange and support. 5) ENACT pan-European change by validating and disseminating a scalable dual-track training model. The project aimed to transform university leadership from a closed shop into an open, diverse ecosystem reflecting democratic values.

Background

The project addresses the critical lack of diversity in European Higher Education (HE) leadership. Despite diverse student bodies, the executive roles in higher education institutions (HEIs) remain dominated by a homogenous demographic. As such, two core needs were identified: 1) Aspiring leaders from underrepresented groups lack the "cultural capital" and informal networks to navigate promotion pathways. 2) Current leaders often lack the "EDI literacy" to recognise implicit bias or foster inclusive institutional cultures. This disconnect stalls EDI commitments e.g., the implementation of Gender Equality Plans. ULEAD4ALL applied to bridge this clear gap by moving from policy to behavioural change, aligning with the EU strategy for universities to be "lighthouses of our European way of life.”
