Objectives

These are the objectives and achievements of the project: Community building: Sailing offers young people aged 15 to 25 a unique opportunity where the absence of an internet connection encourages the creation of links between people on board the ship. Youth, mentors, and staff formed a single crew whose contribution to the tasks on board was essential to the success of the project. Moreover, the Gulden Leeuw was chosen for its capacity to welcome young people with difficulties such as physical disabilities and neurodivergence (autism.) The project thus aimed to create an inclusive and intercultural community. Sailing experience and non-formal education: the objective of the project was to gather 60 participants from 6 different nationalities. The group was led by professionals who had made their careers in the maritime world and who were willing to share their knowledge with the new generation. According to research conducted by Sail Training International (STI) "if the purposes of sail training are specifically concerned with learning and development, programs with a more structured educational approach provide a more effective experience." Windseeker Foundation, thanks to its experience, was able to offer participants a day-to-day program designed by, for and with young people. Environment and fight against climate change: Seeing the plastic in the seas makes it a completely different experience. My proposal: “Plastic pollution is a worldwide problem, and seeing its effects in the seas makes it a completely different experience from just hearing about it.The participants experienced this during environmental activities, such as a Do It Yourself (DIY) workshop to make their eco-friendly hygiene products, or when they challenged themselves to get groceries without any plastic used. To be able to inspire others in their network, participants had to see things from a different perspective, have the confidence they could handle any challenge life throws at them, and make a change. The reflection and the setting of goals are essential during this process. We did micro-plastic research and clean-ups WITH locals! to raise awareness and incentivize the debate on the theme. The quality of the sustainability-related activities was ensured by the onboard researcher sent by The Ocean Movement, in cooperation with Nordic Ocean Watch Denmark. Young people had the opportunity to participate in the collection of data to quantify the state of plastic pollution in the oceans and thus raised their ecological awareness by taking concrete action. Inclusion and Diversity: Roughly half of the youngsters on board were living with fewer opportunities. Everybody was equally included in all aspects of life on board: we simply needed everybody to sail the ship together. Participants bonded easier in challenging situations, once they understood everyone was important to sail the ship, regardless of experience and background. To be included in all activities, it was important that participants were comfortable speaking and expressing themselves. Therefore, there was special support in the preparations of the Exchange for those participants who did not feel so comfortable using English as the main language. We wanted to give personal guidance. Moreover, mentors were there to provide guidance and the crew did the same during sail training activities. Also, the participants were helping each other, and translating where it was needed. We know from experience that the theme of inclusion and diversity is covered in a very natural way on board: simply by being together and reflecting on that in regular sessions of ‘clearing’. However, there were activities in the day-to-day program with an actual inclusion focus. One example we can give is the “talk of the day” Participation, common values, and civic engagement: The skills required to get people more involved in their communities are very similar to the ones necessary to help build a greener future: self-esteem, confidence, personal development, etc. By implementing a few activities that focus on personal growth and democracy, as well as incentivizing the reflection on those topics, participants became more aware of the importance of their civic participation. These topics fit together very well, strengthening and amplifying each other: to work on sustainability issues, we needed to include everybody and thus needed to understand how to work together. By joining this program participants became better prepared to face the challenges of modern society and life in their community or their professional/academic career, and aware of their ability to make a change.
