Philoxenia 2024 aimed to create an inclusive space for young adults from diverse backgrounds to grow personally, build trust across cultural differences, and create a sense of shared European identity. Grounded in the philosophy of "Philoxenia"—the love and hospitality for strangers—the project aimed to empower participants to embrace diversity, engage in dialogue with a more open attitude, and eventually become active contributors to their communities. The project objectives focused on supporting participants in developing the necessary self-awareness, vulnerability, and openness towards others through empathy, intercultural dialogue, and collaboration. This was strengthened by helping participants take actionable steps toward societal change through creative expression, community-building initiatives, and collaborative problem-solving. The activities of Philoxenia 2024 were intentionally designed under the umbrella of these objectives. In particular, there was an emphasis on intercultural collaboration, self-reflection, and active citizenship. Participants were continuously mixed into different subgroups for activities, ensuring exposure to diverse perspectives not only shaped by differences in culture, but also in religion, socio-economic background, language and gender. This approach encouraged participants to confront and overcome biases, leading to trust and collaboration with the "stranger." Through reflective group exercises, participants explored cultural similarities and differences, shared values, and global challenges. These activities emphasized the shared identity of all participants as humans and encouraged them to consider how this influences their actions and decisions. Workshops that encouraged creativity and collaboration through engaging a number of non-formal and informal learning methods formed a cornerstone of the program, providing participants with opportunities to discover connections between art and technology, nature and culture, and engage in constructive discussions about social matters. Activities such as harvesting vegetables with the local partner that provided the food for the exchange, preparing meals together, and reflecting on food production were designed to deepen participants’ understanding of sustainability and teamwork. This, in combination with activities that were focused on introspection, ideation and group discussions, created a powerful combination to encourage critical thinking and active citizenship. By supporting participants to build networks and friendships across cultural and personal differences, Philoxenia 2024 successfully empowered participants to move one step higher from passive consumers to active changemakers. As measured through our impact evaluations, participants overall reported feeling a renewed sense of agency and motivation to contribute to a more inclusive and connected European future through community building, political engagement, and creative initiatives. The project’s emphasis on trust, collaboration, and intercultural understanding left a lasting impact on the participants, inspiring them to continue their journeys as active citizens.
