By implementing the NEXTGEN_GO project between July 9th and July 28th 2023 , we aimed to achieve several critical objectives centered around providing meaningful opportunities for disadvantaged youth. These objectives included: Our primary goal was to offer a transformative travel experience to five young individuals from NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) backgrounds, enabling them to explore European cultures and gain new perspectives. This exposure was designed to broaden their horizons, inspire their future aspirations, and encourage them to take control of their life paths. As an environmental organization, we sought to inculcate sustainable behaviors among these youth. By using green mobility options like interrail, introducing them to recycling practices, and engaging them in sustainable travel activities (such as vegan cooking and nature-based itineraries), we aimed to foster a lifestyle that values and promotes environmental sustainability. Given that the participants were leading sedentary and unhealthy lifestyles, part of our objective was to introduce them to active and outdoor pursuits like hiking, surfing, and wild swimming. These activities not only provided immediate physical health benefits but also served as potential long-term interests that could improve their overall well-being. The project was structured to involve the participants in every aspect of planning and execution, from organizing their travel to managing their daily activities. This approach was intended to develop their organizational, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, fostering greater independence and self-confidence. Through their travels, participants were exposed to diverse European cultures, enhancing their understanding and tolerance of cultural differences. This experience was crucial for promoting civic competences, helping them appreciate the cultural richness of Europe, and countering stereotypes. By documenting and sharing the experiences of these young travelers, we aimed to highlight the potential of disadvantaged youth when given opportunities. This visibility was intended to inspire other young people in similar situations and demonstrate the impact of supportive interventions. The trip was designed to have lasting effects beyond its conclusion. By engaging with various aspects of European geography, sustainability, and culture, the participants not only enriched their immediate experiences but also built resilience and adaptive skills that would benefit them throughout their lives. Through NEXTGEN_GO, we successfully met these objectives, offering a life-changing experience to our participants that equipped them with new skills, perspectives, and the confidence to navigate their futures more effectively.
