We discussed what really makes us able to speak of ourselves as a nation-is it just language and a shared history, or something more. As we wrote the proposal, we decided that this something more included customs, cuisine, fashion, architecture and religion. In cooperation with our mentors, we contacted the Rezeknes Nacionalo biedribu kulturas nams organization from Latvia. After exchanging several emails and messages on Whatsapp, we were able to agree on the goals of the project with the Latvian group. For them, too, the topic seemed interesting, especially since the Latvian state itself actually has a short history, yet Latvians as a nation have their own distinct language and culture, and they too wanted to explore what really made them manage to maintain their distinctiveness. At the same time, we talked about how to work together and live in peace. In the context of the current war in Ukraine, it became clear that there can be such differences between nations that push them to war. We talked about what makes it possible to communicate and cooperate while preserving one's identity. It occurred to us that for some people of our generation and a little older, nation is important to such an extent that they are ready, insult or even attack people from other nations. We have been looking for ways that allow youth from different countries to work together keeping in mind, including the sometimes sensitive nationality issues. Together with the Latvian group, we agreed that what we wanted to achieve through this exchange was: - understanding what a country's tradition and culture is (based on our Polish and Latvian heritage) - getting to know factors shaping culture and tradition such as cuisine, customs, architecture, fashion or religion - getting to know and understand the Polish and Latvian culture and traditions by spending 8 days of the exchange together - developing ways of preserving national culture and traditions - to develop ways of good cooperation between young people from different countries - to develop our language skills (English), through daily conversations in this language, throughout the exchange.
