Objectives

The KALEIDOSCOPE project aimed to foster intercultural understanding, empower young people, and address critical social issues through creative arts and digital media. Our main objectives were to train youth workers from seven countries in the KALEIDOSCOPE methodology, involve groups of young people in each country in creative processes, establish a multiplier effect for youth workers and young people in Lublin, and showcase the project's outcomes at the European Youth Capital Lublin. We sought to provide young people with practical tools to express their views on social and cultural issues, thereby building their confidence, skills, and cultural awareness. Importance of Giving Young People a Voice This project was crucial in giving young people a voice through various creative mediums, such as writing, graphics, and videos/podcasts. By enabling them to articulate their perspectives and experiences, we empowered them to become active contributors to social discourse. Using different forms of media allowed participants to choose the medium that best suited their strengths and interests, ensuring inclusivity and maximising impact. This multifaceted approach not only amplified their voices but also connected them with peers facing similar issues globally, fostering a sense of solidarity and shared purpose in addressing global challenges. We believe that stories and how we tell those stories are the key to understanding global issues and how we look at them and how we start to solve them as an international community of active citizens. KALEIDOSCOPE is a unique methodology that gets participants to look at identifying issues that are important, what young people have to say on that issue (Problems it causes, solutions, root causes etc) and then they get to see that issue through other peoples eyes when it goes through a cultural filter (Article to graphic to film/podcast) - this shows that even local/national issues that they are dealing with can also be the same issue as other young people from other countries are dealing with - its a method to connect, share, empower and break down borders and issues and truly start to look at solving global issues as global citizens. For this project our main aim was to foster intercultural understanding and solidarity among young people from areas affected by conflict, both past and present, as well as those from countries that have welcomed diaspora communities or provided refuge for those fleeing conflict. The war in Ukraine (and also now Israel and the middle east) has brought these issues to the forefront of current concerns, but there is much to be learned from historical experiences. Our choice of partners reflected our commitment to this comprehensive perspective. We recognised the necessity for youth workers to have practical tools that help young people learn about these critical issues and express their views in creative, culturally aware ways. This project also addressed other needs: - For participants: To gain new skills and confidence as youth workers, enabling them to engage marginalised groups such as migrants and refugees through community arts, media, and journalism activities. - For local youth: To build self-confidence, cultural awareness, and creative/technical skills, improving their life prospects and fostering community integration. - For partner organisations: To connect across communities, demonstrate impact, and share their findings with key stakeholders, sponsors, and the wider public. By utilising creative media, this project will empower young people throughout Europe to report on social and cultural issues related to exile. It will also develop the relevant skills of youth workers, young people, and partner organisations involved. The project's outputs will include written articles, graphics, and video/podcasts. In the long run, this will enhance public awareness and understanding of intercultural issues, and engage more young people in reporting on these topics. The main original objectives of our project were: 1. To train youth workers from seven countries in the Kaleidoscope creative methodology. 2. To involve groups of young people in each country in the creative process, guided by the trained youth workers. (For the local activities) 3. To establish a multiplier process for youth workers and young people in Lublin, led by the trained youth workers. (How do we replicate this methodology?) 4. To showcase the outcomes of the entire process to a broader audience at the European Youth Capital Lublin 2023 event.
